Masters Athletics Article

Masters Athletics

The great thing about Masters Athletics clichéd as it sounds, is that there really is something for everyone, including me! I don’t think they believed my ‘I used to be a winger’ line.

My boys Mataio & Tavita were in the Waitakere Junior Athletics Club & my brother Star Inivale visiting from a parallel universe somehow thought I had shotput talent & he amazingly was able to drag/nag/dupe 30 poor gullible souls to ‘Have A Go’ at the Auckland Masters public Gideon Tait Athletics Day held at the end of each year.

To my complete astonishment, apparently Coca Cola is not thought of as a legitimate hydration solution at these events. Go figure, next I’ll be hearing that a KFC Family bucket with its secret herbs & spices, is not a viable source of protein? This is the product placement section of my ramblings.

Anyway one thing that struck me straight away & seriously inspired me, was the vision being played out in front of my eyes of what physically healthy ‘old’ (ie. From 30 to 90 years young plus) people look like. I didn’t need to accept breaking down ungracefully as I got older, I could come out swinging. This is the warm fuzzy section for those that care about that sort of stuff.

The sands of time may have weakened & ravaged the body, but the uncompromising competitive spirit to get a new Personal Best, win an event or break records rages on undiminished & unbowed. That was the deep profound one hand clapping section.

After a rocky start in Dec 2010 (note to self, stay away from sprints, even though I used to be a winger) I haven’t looked back. I’ve competed in 4 Masters events now & although my shotput technique is, I know there is no easy way to put this, stinking pretty ugly, it is fun & there is tons of support. Puzzling however, I still can’t understand why Jacko Gill hasn’t prised himself away from his frenetic Olympic training schedule to come & give me some tips. This is the ‘Does Jacko even know my name’ section :-)

Special thanks to Murray Free, Ben Chong Wong & Sam Pou for their infinite patience, encouragement, mocking & training in shotput, but please I’ll call you if I ever want to do Hammer Throw anytime soon …  Whatever. Not surprisingly, this was the ‘Don’t call me if its Hammer Throw training’ section.

Now, don’t be a Tui Board ‘Yeah Right’ spectator, rise up & be a Bucket List achiever. Have a go when summer is upon us, check out the sponsor section as there is something for everyone & it’s been wonderful for my boys:

So if you want to take me on, I’ll see you there.
Thanks Masters Athletics
