NZ Masters Games - Dunedin

AMA members Althea Mackie and Katy Tapling made the trip south and competed in the Dunedin Masters games held from Jan 26 to Feb 7th, both competed in six events each, with some pleasing results.

TV 1 had some coverage showing the W75+ plus running the 100m focusing on 95 year old Rose Jacob from Hamilton, the weather conditions looked good but no sign of our two girls obviously too young to be of any interest to the media.

Top Team Two

Some fierce competition in the latest round of the Top Team series. NSB are still well in front on points, but there is a battle for the minor placings with three clubs being within a few points of each other.
A problem with the electronic timing meant that all the track results are taken from video. All times are accurate to within 1/25th of a second. Full results are available on the
results page, including the latest Ernie Haskell progress results (after Day 3 of the competition).

NI Champs - Palmerston North
Having been given prior notice not to expect too much in the way of facilities and home comforts and advised to bring your own chair, once located the University track in Palmerston North was a pleasant surprise. We could have done with a few signs as a few athletes managed to get lost in the Recreation Centre Car Park with one irate person having to pay to get out.
Surrounded by lush green countryside and long rows of tall hedges there was plenty of shelter, hot coffee and yummy home cooking on offer. Massage tents, Army tents, and great hospitality and if you had no one to watch, the Wind farms on the far hills were mesmerizing to watch.

The weather was not kind with rain and windy conditions throughout the weekend, the sun appeared on Sunday but that wind just didn’t go away. The LOC did a great job, electronic timing was used and results were available promptly, where possible events were pushed through to avoid athletes hanging around in the rain especially on Saturday.
The inclusion of the Special Olympic athletes worked well and it was great to see them enjoying themselves especially in their relays when everyone at the track gave them lots of encouragement.
There were some good performances by our Auckland athletes with some record applications put forward for ratification.

Full results are available on the NZMA website.

Aucklanders who attended the championships were:
Chris Waring, Margaret Peters, John Campbell, Tui Ashe, Trevor Ashe, David Ledger, Judith Stewart, Mark Cumming, Jos Pols, Peter Blucher, Wally Opperman

Gideon Tait Memorial T&F Meet
An excellent turnout for our first Track & Field meeting of the year and with the Nth Island champs coming up soon, there were a number of athletes striving for good performances. With several new members and some guests travelling up from Hamilton, it was a great day and the performances certainly matched the atmosphere. Margaret Peters once again stole the show, as she not only won the Gideon Tait trophy, but also smashed her NZ 100m record with a time of 16.03 and equalled the NZ long jump record of 0.95m. David Ledger High Jump (1.63m) and John Campbell 100m (11.88), broke M45 Auckland records also.

The final Gideon Tait placings were:
Margaret Peters 1st: 93.22% ave, Anne Goulter 2nd: 91.22% ave, Ron Johnson 3rd: 87.50% ave.
Good to see the new members taking part and it is shaping up to be an interesting season in the Top Team competition.
